Jilkminggan Op-shop began its journey as a collaborative initiative between our art centre ladies and Enterprise Learning Projects (ELP). At the request of Jilkminggan Community Aboriginal Corporation, ELP visited our team of artists to discuss aspirations for our new art centre and ideas for generating seed capital. The concept of a community op-shop was decided upon as something that was achievable, and we worked together to launch the enterprise in March 2016.
The Jilkminggan Op-shop has had a huge response from across Australia, with donations of clothes, shoes, kitchenwares, books and many more wonderful gifts. Our families are constantly amazed at what they see when they come in – we wish to heartfully thank Australia for their ongoing support. Our op-shop has successfully achieved its original aim of funding art materials and activities. It now helps to seed other exciting ventures within the art centre, sustaining its operational costs, as we grow we hope that it will create jobs. Since 2017 Jilkminggan Op Shop has assisted artists to produce their artwork in various forms and in quantity and to promote their art by way of displaying in venues accessible for locals and tourists. 2020!! and our op shop is still going strong!
